Hallway Storage Ideas - How to Organize Your Hallway Closet and Save Yourself From a Crapalanche

A year does not go by without a news story coming out about a person being buried in a pile of their own possessions. Usually these are in homes that are stacked to the roof with newspapers and magazines, or beer cans in one famous case. Most of us do not have anything close to this in our homes, but almost all of us have a hallway or coat closet stuffed with everything but coats. With our family, it was our linen closet, and we used it to put everything in there the toddlers were putting in their mouths or generally destroying. After a while the closet got so full of precariously placed items, that we had a crapalanche. No one was injured, thank God, but we decided it was time to clean the closet out. We used these three simple ideas for our hallway storage and reorganized the closet to prevent any future near disasters.

  • Clear the closet. We began by removing everything out of the closet. We used our kitchen table and floor to put all the stuff. After the closet was empty we vacuumed it and cleaned the shelves. If you are dealing with a linen closet, you can put down some acid free tissue paper after you get it clean.
  • Sort the junk. We could not believe some of the stuff we found in the closet. Items we did not even know we owned, or where they came from. We found lots of stuff that was either trash or that we could donate. Most of the items actually belonged somewhere else in the house, since it was our linen closet.
  • Load it up. After we had everything sorted, we began to load the closet back up, this time taking care not to have any piles too high. We also adjusted the shelves in the closet to work a little better for us. There are tons of innovative products for closets available at most department or hardware stores. They can help you maximize your space and pack your closet fuller, but safer.

Hopefully you have never had a crapalanche at your home, but if you think you are on the verge of having one, these three steps will help you avoid being covered in a pile of your own stuff. Now we use containers for our items we want to safe guard from the kids, rather than creating a recipe for disaster.
